Netflix Leads 2021 GLAAD Media Awards Nominations For LGBTQ Representation

In the past few years, Netflix has dominated the GLAAD nominations, and 2021 is no different. The GLAAD Media Award recognizes excellence in representation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community and the issues affecting their lives. Other burgeoning networks made the cut this year as well, including HBO Max with 9 nominations, and Amazon, Hulu, and HBO each receiving four nominations. In 2021, several categories were increased from five to ten nominees in an effort to recognize the growing diversity within media genres of LGBTQ+ representation.

One of the biggest contenders of the year is Ryan Murphy, who was nominated for six nominations for his work on his coterie of shows that include Boys in the Band, Circus of Books, The Prom, Hollywood, Ratched, and 9-1-1: Lone Star.

There were also standout nominations that qualified as a first – The Hallmark Channel grabbed its first nomination for producing The Christmas House, the network’s first holiday movie featuring a gay character as the lead.

Other shows that featured transgender characters included 9-1-1: Lone Star, Saved by the Bell, Star Trek: Discovery, Big Mouth, and Supergirl.

GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis released a statement regarding the current list of contenders for this year’s awards:

“This year’s nominees remind us that even in times of political and cultural division, diverse LGBTQ representation and visibility can enlighten, entertain, and create lasting change.”

Overall, streaming services clinched 58 nominees, with cable networks receiving 29 nominations, and broadcast networks again bringing up the remainder with 15 nods. In animated news, Pixar’s animated short film Out qualified as the company’s first-ever lead LGBTQ storyline.

Another effort from Amazon Prime Video, After Forever, is an Emmy-Award winning short-form series that chronicles a group of friends. In a report released recently, GLAAD found that LGTBQ+ representation and gender inclusiveness on television is down slightly due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Noted musicians that earned GLAAD nominations in 2021 include Adam Lambert, Brandy Clark, Miley Cyrus, Kehlani, Halsey, Peppermint, Pabllo Vittar, Ricky Martin, and Sam Smith.

The GLAAD Media Awards will announce the winners via a virtual ceremony in April and HomoCulture will be there to cover the news.
